He's afraid that maybe he's wasting his time, that the relationship is doomed to fail, that the good times they're hoping for will only be more bad times, more failure.
The second half of the chorus is his pessimism. But he wants it to begin anew, rising from the ashes, making something new, greater than what came before.
He wants her to put the past behind them, accept the failure of the prior relationship. The first half of the chorus is his optimism about the possibilities of the relationship. And his admittance that he took her for granted, that he didn't realize what the relationship meant to him, or how much he loved her. The verse is an admittance that they are both in love with each other, despite the problems they've been through. The "story in her eyes" is, from the lyricist's perspective, their relationship reflected back at him. My InterpretationMaybe it's clichéd, but I think it's about the uncertain future of a struggling relationship. "I can hide inside your sweet sweet love forevermore." I cannot see anything pessimistic about this line. Therefore only one friendly gesture or smile means your life is not in vein. Because all it takes is a genuine smile to positively effect someone's life. We would be mindless shells unable to have any kind of effect on anyone or anything. If it becomes this way, there goes the purpose and meaning to life. I cannot say this because any persons life is never in vein. I've never heard more terrifying lyrics than, "I'm frightened for your children." So how could this song be optimistic? Equally as terrifying are the next lyrics, "And the life we are living is in vein". (I'm not sure) Could be taken pessimistically. "We're part of the fire that's burning and from the ashes we can build another day." I understand, "we're are part of the fire", cool lyrics, but, who or what are the "ashes". This in itself is fine, but it is the story they receive that leaves me horrified. So the realization of the story comes after it has has been shown to them. It's as though the band gets their music from their audience or some group of people. It's been shining down upon us now I realize." This is the most amazing lyrics I've ever heard. "The sound we make together is the music to the story in your eyes. The love inside us is still the same, but must be more difficult to access. No one is blamed for our fortune tells me our fortune is not good. It's the most terrifying rock song I know.
